A scarce first edition, published in London by J.W. Arrowsmith. Bound in blue cloth with title gilt on covers and spine, along with motif of a blacksmith at the forge to the lower right corner. Light age wear, lightly foxed throughout. Brightly coloured figures pasted into free endpaper, the logo of the publisher (see images). Hall's first novel, often described as a "social comedy" in the style of Jane Austen, concerning the very straight problems of a very straight couple moving from London to the countryside.
