This privacy policy is for (the 'Site'), is served by Gay's The Word, 66 Marchmont Street, London, WC1N 1AB, ('us', 'we', or 'our') and governs the privacy of its users who choose to use our website, opt into our newsletter, or place orders with us. It explains how we comply with the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), the DPA (Data Protection Act) and the PECR (Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations).

This policy will explain how we process, collect, manage and store your details and how your rights under the GDPR, DPA & PECR are adhered to.

While using our Site, signing up to receive our newsletter, or ordering books, we may ask you to provide us with certain personally identifiable information that can be used to contact or identify you. Personally identifiable information may include, but is not limited to your name or email address ("Personal Information").

The security of your Personal Information is important to us, but remember that no method of transmission over the Internet, or method of electronic storage, is 100% secure. We use SSL (secure socket layer) encryption for all financial transactions. All data we collect about users of our website is similarly protected and will never be knowingly shared or sold.


We use Google Analytics to better understand how visitors use our website and to do this our site places cookies (small text files) on devices that are used to access it. Cookies will anonymously record information as well as the type of device used, which pages were viewed and for how long, inbound referrals (how a visitor reached our website), and links clicked. By clicking 'Accept' on the low banner when you visit our site, you agree to the placement of cookies on your device.


Data collected by our website's cookies are stored for 14 months (Google Analytics' minimum) and this information is not shared with any other parties during this time. We operate an email newsletter program which we use to inform subscribers about bookshop news and events. Users can opt-in to the newsletter through an online form on the Site, and subscribers can unsubscribe at any time through an automated online service, or if not available, other means as detailed in the footer of sent marketing messages. Subscriber personal details are collected, processed, managed and stored in accordance with the regulations named above. 

Our EMS (email marketing service) provider is MailChimp who use Google Maps to track some subscriber activity. You can read their privacy policy here.

Customer Orders

When placing a customer order for a product, we will collect some customer information including name and email address which will only be used to contact the customer with updates on the status of their order. This information is stored securely for use with subsequent orders, and a history of products ordered by each customer will be retained. This order history is not shared with any third parties, and customers can request access to the contact details and order history we hold for them at any time, as well as requesting the erasure of all information held if required.
