Group Visits

Planning Your Visit

The bookshop is a very small space which can get extremely busy. We want everyone visiting the bookshop to have a relaxed and enjoyable experience, be they a lone browser enjoying a precious day off, or a social / student group excited to see the store for the first time. It is essential that anyone planning a group or school visit to Gay’s the Word bookshop notifies and liaises with us well - at least three weeks - in advance. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays can get especially busy here and visits on these days should be avoided; groups turning up without a pre-arrangement, especially on these days, may regretfully be turned away. Groups of 10 people or more may need to break up into smaller groups with staggered entry, supervised by a pre-arranged group leader. Please use the contact form on our website to enquire about your intended group visit. It may be possible to arrange a private morning visit for a group before we open to the public at 11am. The earlier that you engage with us ahead of your intended visit the higher the likelihood we’ll be able to accommodate you. These measures are in place to ensure everyone visiting Gay’s the Word has an enjoyable time. Many thanks.

Accessibility

Wheelchair access

The bookshop is wheelchair accessible. There is a small fixed ramp at the front door, and a portable ramp will be placed by staff when required to provide access to the sections at the back of the bookshop.

Guidance for individuals with visual impairment

We are very happy to give guidance around the bookshop, read blurbs, and compile books for review or purchase. We do not stock large print books, but we may be able to order these for you.

Sound/Hearing

We do play background music during shop hours. If you would prefer silence, we can turn off the music while you browse. While we do not have a hearing loop or have a staff member who knows BSL, we endeavour to speak clearly and face forward with customers and are very happy to communicate with pen and paper.

Seating

A stool or chair can be provided for seating whilst browsing, please just ask a member of staff and they will provide one for you. For in-house events, seating will almost always be provided as part of the event; if not, seating is available upon request.

Toilet

We have a toilet on the ground floor level that can be accessed without steps, but it is not wheelchair accessible.
