Future, Past & Present
At Gay's The Word bookshop, we hold a wide range of book events, from launches to readings to panel discussions to signings. In the pre-Covid-19 world, we'd gather to celebrate, raise a glass, and send people home with a gorgeous new book (or five). Currently, we are able to offer informal book signings for authors and a small number of online events, with books available for pre-order and online. The bookshop also serves as a meeting place for three community groups on a regular basis, who are also currently meeting online.
The best way to keep up-to-date on our latest events is to join our mailing list and/or to follow us on Facebook. We post all the information you'll need about upcoming events there, but you also see notices on our Twitter or Instagram, too!
The Story of Sidonie C:
Freud's Famous 'Case of Female Homosexuality'
a conversation with Jane Czyzselska & Stella Duffy
An event inspired by the recently translated book The Story of Sidonie C by Ines Rieder and Diana Voigt (translated by Jill Hannum and Ines Rieder) published by Helena History Press. (Available now)
At the age of 17 Margarethe Csonka fell deeply in love with a stunning and notorious upper-class courtesan, attempted suicide when she was rejected and was sent by her parents to Prof. Freud to be “normalized”. The attempted cure was a failure.
Now finally available in English, this biography of Margarethe Csonka-Trautenegg (1900-1999) offers a fully-rounded picture of a willful and psychologically complex aesthete.

Gay's the Word
To mark our 40th Anniversary, we celebrated with a multifaceted event at the British Library, including authors and poets, such as Philip Hensher, Kirsty Logan, Juno Dawson, Jay Bernard, Mary Jean Chan, Andrew McMillan, and Richard Scott with video messages from Sarah Waters, Armistead Maupin, and Edmund White.
It was recorded and posted on YouTube for posterity and wider accessibility.
